ORIGIN |
The name St. John´s Bread (carob)results from
a legend. This means when John the Baptist was in the desert he nourished
himself together with grasshoppers of the fruits of this
tree. The name Ceratonia siliqua is derived from to keràtion (ancient
greek
for horn). This refers to the hornshaped fruits. |

CARAT |

For approximately one thousand five hundred years the cores of the
carob are used as the smallest unit of weight for
pharmacists and juwellers. The cores exhibit independently of form and
size a constant weight of 0,2 gram. From this use the usual term carat still today comes. (gold and jewels)
