NAME

ORIGIN

The name St. John´s Bread (carob)results from a legend. This means when John the Baptist was in the desert he nourished himself together with grasshoppers of the fruits of this tree.

The name Ceratonia siliqua is derived from to keràtion (ancient greek for horn). This refers to the hornshaped fruits.

CARAT

For approximately one thousand five hundred years the cores of the carob are used as the smallest unit of weight for pharmacists and juwellers. The cores exhibit independently of form and size a constant weight of 0,2 gram. From this use  the usual term carat still today comes. (gold and jewels)
